| After the Buddha entered Parinirvana, disciples thought
that they needed to record the Buddha's discourses,
seriously. The first recording of the Buddha's discourses
was called the Pattra Sutra which the Teachings were
engraved on leaves of a palm tree. The 'Tripitaka' in
Sanskrit means 'three baskets' and 'the whole sets of
Buddhist
texts' including the Vinaya Pitaka, the Sutra Pitaka,
and the Abhidharma Pitaka. Also it is called 'the Whole
Sutra'.
The Tripitaka is divided into three major groups. One
of them is the Pali Tripitaka, the earliest one in the
world.
This is the records of the early Buddhism and contains
the Sutra Pitaka which is discourses of the Buddha, the
Vinaya Pitaka which is rules of Sangha and precepts, and
the Abhidharma Pitaka which is studies on Buddhist
doctrines. The next group of the Tripitaka is the Tibetan
Tripitaka, and the third group is the Chinese Tripitaka
which
is familiar to Koreans. In the Chinese Tripitaka group,
there are about 20 important Tripitakas; the Tripitaka
of Northern
Sung edition, the First Tripitaka of Koryeo, the Khitan
Tripitaka, the Supplement Tripitaka of Koryeo, the Koryeo
Tripitaka, the Sinsu Tripitaka of Japan, the Namjeon Tripitaka
of Japan, ... Among these Tripitakas,
the Koryeo Tripitaka containing more than 80 thousands
blocks is regarded as the best corrected and completed
one. |
